How Much Does Drywall Repair Cost?

Due to an unfortunate accident, your drywall has been damaged.  It is unsightly (not to mention potentially unsafe), and you want to repair it as soon as possible.  What are your options for this repair, and how much should you expect to spend?

The cost of drywall repair depends largely on the size and location of the repair.  Small issues can be repaired much more easily than large issues and will therefore cost less.  Problems at a corner or in the ceiling are also more costly, as are problems that require replacement of whole panels.

The smallest drywall repairs should cost no more than $200 if you hire a professional to do the work.  Small patches can also often be done yourself - repair kits generally cost between $15 and $40, and you will often have materials left over for future repairs.  If you feel confident in your abilities, patching holes of no more than a few inches yourself is by far the most cost effective method.

For larger repairs, employing a professional is recommended.  Professional drywall installers generally charge between $75 and $115 per hour for repair work.  The number of hours required to complete the project will vary with the size and complexity of the repair.  Materials may or may not be included, but for an average size patch, materials should cost no more than $40.

Professionals will generally charge the same hourly rates mentioned above for repairing chips and cracks.  Small chips can usually be repaired at home with the above mentioned repair kits, but large cracks are best left to professionals.  Bear in mind that if the cracks are due to a shifting or settling foundation, they will return if the foundation issues are not addressed first.  If you notice cracks in your foundation as well as your drywall or if your doors and windows do not open and close as easily as they used to, we strongly recommend calling a foundation repair specialist to assess the condition of your foundation before repairing major cracks in your drywall.

Repairing drywall after water damage will incur the same hourly rates as other drywall repair, but will often require other professionals to deal with mold and plumbing issues.  If the water damage was caused by a plumbing leak, be sure to have the plumbing issue corrected before repairing or replacing the drywall.  If you see any signs of mold or if there is evidence that water has been in the walls for any length of time, professional mold removal is recommended to ensure that spores do not spread to other areas of the house.  This service generally comes with a steep price tag (usually several thousand dollars), but it is well worth it for both your health and the longevity of your home.

Drywall repairs are nothing out of the ordinary, and small repairs can be made relatively inexpensively.  The earlier you repair the problem, the less it will cost to repair!
